Chepstow Osteopaths - Whiplash

What is whiplash?

'Whiplash' describes the rapid forceful movements of the neck backwards and forwards (or occasionally from side to side) which occurs most commonly in road traffic accidents or as a result of an injury or fall whilst taking part in certain sports such as horse riding, parachuting etc.

What happens to the body with a whiplash injury?

The excessive forces can cause trauma and changes of mobility in the spinal joints with possible resultant damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs and nerves in the surrounding area.
This causes the characteristic ‘Pain, Stiffness and Disability’ that we see on a daily basis.

How do I know if have whiplash?

The most common physical symptoms of whiplash are:

  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Shoulder pain
  • Pain into the arms with occasional radiations as far as the hands
  • Low back pain and/or stiffness
  • Pain between the shoulder blades

Less common symptoms may include:

  • Psychological Symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness / Nausea
  • Numbness and Tingling
  • Facial pain

What should I do if I have had a whiplash?

We would strongly advise you to be examined and treated for your injuries as soon as possible.
It has been shown that early intervention with appropriate treatment results in the most rapid resolution of whiplash symptoms and that if the effects of whiplash are not treated correctly, they may go on to cause problems for many years.
